Triumph TR7 upgraded in period to TR8 Specification.

The Triumph TR8 is a more powerful V8 version of the TR7 wedge shaped sports car  designed by Harris Mann. First appearing in the North American market and using  the proven all-alloy 3.5 litre V8 Rover engine. This boasted impressive performance propelling the car form 0-60 mph in just 8 seconds and earning the nickname “English Corvette’. The majority of the TR8’s were built for export with British Leyland eventually introducing the car to the UK and European markets in Novemeber 1981. A mere 18 right hand drive examples were produced before the whole TR range was cancelled by British Leyland executives.

Due to the very limited production number of original right hand drive TR8’s being produced, several specialist firms offered the option of upgrading a standard TR7 to full TR8 specification. This upgrade turned the car into what many felt it should have been when launched. One such company was S&S Preparations  a well known Truimph specialist who offered a complete upgrade kit.

The Triumph TR7 upgraded in period to TR8 specifiaction offered here at Autostorico was first registered in August 1980 and has covered 107,883 miles. Finished in Red with Beige leather interior trim. The conversion works to TR8 specification was completed in the 1980’s works included fitting a Rover 3.5 V8 engine, Tubular extractor manifolds, Performance side pipe exit exhaust system, TR8 radiator, TR8 vented brake discs, Mintex brake pads, Copper brake pipes and Spax adjustable shock absorbers. An engineer’s report from 1991 summarises that “the conversion of this car from standard TR7 to TR8 specification has been thoroughly and carefully carried out”.

The car was purchased by its current classic car enthusiast in 2017. During his tenure he has spent just under £8000 with works including; Top end engine overhaul including new cam, followers, timing chain and sprockets. New electronic ignition system including a Distributor Doctor 35DE8 distributor. New Firestone tyres, Full refurbish of diamond turned wheels and various documented body repairs.
