Triumph TR3A
The Triumph TR3A was built between 1957 and 1961 by the Standard Motor Car Company of Coventry as a two seater roadster, and boasted a number of cosmetic upgrades from the standard TR3. These included a wider front grill incorporating indicators, exterior door handles, lockable boot handle and an improved interior. With the TR3A Triumph were genuinely able to rival MG and Jaguar offering practical, 100mph-plus, performance at a reasonable price. Powered by a 2 litre, 4 cylinder engine developing just shy of 100bhp the TR3A was capable of reaching 60mph in just under 11 seconds. Consequently, the TR3 was campaigned in various motor sport events including; Monte Carlo Rally, Tour de France, 12 Hours at Sebring and the Mille Miglia, achieving numerous outright, team and class victories. In 1959 Triumph even entered three extensively modified TR3’s to the 24H Le Mans race and at one point one of the cars was running in overall seventh place before being forced to retire due to mechanical issue with just over an hour remaining of the race.
